Zoysia Grass- Spring Update
8 January 2010Well, winter is finally over and the grass is really starting to grow now. I have mowed my yard 4 times so far this year already. The zoysia grass is just now starting to get green. It appears that the zoysia actually dies each year and new growth comes up each year, so it is like the perennial flowers you have in your garden. The old grass is dead and yellow and stays that way until the new grass grows up big enough to cover it.
My zoysia is not completely filled in yet and I see no spreading of the patches I planted last year so far. I guess I’ll keep watching, but to be honest it is not performing as I had hoped it would. I may try to takes some plugs out and spread them around to see if I can get more coverage that way because I think it will take years to get coverage the way I am currently going.
Here are the pics…remember I have already mowed my yard 4 times this year. The pics were taken on May 4th, 2010. Don’t know when the next update will be. but if there is anything significant to report you will see it here.
Here is a close up of one of the patches.

Any progress thru the summer? My yard just exploded with zoysia over the summer. I would say the the side yard that I planted three years ago went from a few patches to almost 50% full. the front yard seems like it’s a year behind the side yard. a drastic improvement from my earlier post.

Not much of an improvement, not enough spreading. I took some pictures but have not taken the time to post. What I did notice was that in the middle of the summer when it had been in the 90′s for a couple of weeks with no rain the zoysia was still green when the rest of the grass was turning brown.

One thing I’ve noticed is the Zoysia planted near the side walk or drive way spread a lot faster than the plugs in the center of the yard. I’m thinking this may have something to do with the concrete warming up faster due to the sun thus
warming the near by soil faster? Just a guess
